‘I spent months at an eating disorders treatment clinic. Things did improve, in fact quite a lot. I no longer want to continue starving myself and my attention seems to have shifted away from my weight, expanded into other aspects of life. However, I still feel that somehow, there is something that is yet unresolved. Perhaps relationships is what I’d like to work through in this therapy’ – said a young person looking to go into a deeper treatment. Her request for analysis emerged once she had had experience with CBT and other symptom focused therapies. She had even worked in family therapy for a few sessions, though still had not explored the unconscious motivations behind her recurrent symptoms and behaviours. She had not had the opportunity to go beyond her pattern of behaviour, beyond the repetition to find what laid behind. This time, once her symptoms had eased a little, she was interested to look further.

What is Psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is the kind of therapy that would provide the space, time and pace to look further. It allows for a more profound insight into the person’s life. This includes looking back into childhood, into family dynamics, relationships and dreams. The main tool is the person’s speech.
